An inmate at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning was pronounced dead on Sunday following a choking incident inside a housing unit.
According to authorities, deputies were alerted to an inmate who was choking on food inside a housing unit, prompting corrections staff and jail medical personnel to respond and administer medical aid.
Responding paramedics assumed life-saving measures upon arrival, but despite those measures, 48-year-old Robert Wayne Shingleton of Aguanga was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators from the Riverside Sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigations Bureau and the Coroner’s Bureau responded and assumed the investigation.
