Inmate captured after escaping from John Benoit Detention Center

On July 18, Riverside County Sheriff’s Dispatch was alerted to the escape of Angel Felipe Aleman, 35, from the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio. Multiple resources were deployed and a perimeter was set around the immediate area. After a thorough search, Aleman was located and taken into custody.

On July 17, Aleman allegedly stole a bank deposit bag containing about $140,000 from an armored vehicle in Indio, according to the Indio Police Department. After a search, Aleman was found performing yard work in the front yard of a nearby residence.

According to the Indio Police Department, detectives located the money hidden in a shallow hole under a box in a dirt lot near Cheyenne Street while searching the course of travel Aleman possibly took while fleeing the scene of the crime.

Jail records show that Aleman was arrested and booked on suspicion of grand theft. Police said he was behind bars without bail. It was not immediately clear how Aleman escaped custody. Anyone with information about Aleman’s escape is asked to call Investigator Letterly at 760-863-8305.
