Lake Elsinore is closed for all recreational uses until further notice, the city announced today. As a public safety precaution, the lake is closed due to the presence of multiple toxins produced by the recent algae bloom.
Like many natural lakes throughout the state, Lake Elsinore experiences reoccurring algae blooms as a result of reduced lake levels caused by current drought conditions and the onset of higher temperatures.
All activities, including boating, fishing, and swimming, are strongly advised against. Additionally, the city has closed Launch Pointe’s boat launch and restricted beach access until lake conditions improve.
Visitors to Lake Elsinore are advised to take the following precautions:
- Stay out of the water until further notice.
- Do not touch or come in contact with scum in the water or on shore.
- Do not let pets drink or go into the water or near the scum.
- Do not eat fish caught in the lake even if it has been gutted and/or cleaned with fresh water.
- Do not use this water for drinking or cooking. Boiling or filtering will not make the water safe.
- If you or your pet get sick after going in the water, contact your doctor or veterinarian.

Additional sampling of the lake will take place today, August 19, and will continue weekly until the lake improves.
To ensure the Lake is managed and treated appropriately, the city was recently awarded a grant to perform a study to evaluate aquatic pesticide management practices that will be implemented to protect surface waters within Lake Elsinore. The public comment period is currently open, and the city encourages all residents to review the plan and provide feedback before the September 19 deadline. To provide feedback, email [email protected]. The first phase of this project will begin in the next several weeks, the city said.
