Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station deputies conducted a traffic enforcement operation after learning of a planned illegal e-bike and electric motorcycle “takeover” event that was scheduled to take place at Summerlake Park.
Deputies learned that the event was scheduled to take place on June 12 at Summerlake Park, located in the 900 block of Broadway Street. In response, deputies assigned to the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station Traffic Team conducted a targeted enforcement operation at the park and surrounding area.
During the operation, multiple juveniles were contacted and educated about California’s e-bike regulations, as well as the dangers and potential consequences associated with participating in takeover-style events.
Authorities said all of the juveniles and their bikes were ultimately released to their parents or guardians following the contacts.
Deputies also took enforcement action against adult riders. Two adults were cited for violations, and their bikes were impounded. The vehicles will remain in storage until the owners obtain the proper licensing and correct equipment-related violations, according to the sheriff’s station.
The Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station is reminding parents that not all electric-powered two-wheel vehicles qualify as e-bikes under California law. Officials noted that vehicles without pedals and equipped with motors exceeding 750 watts are classified as electric motorcycles and cannot be legally operated by unlicensed youth on public roadways.
To legally operate an electric motorcycle on public streets, riders must possess a valid motorcycle license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, wear a DOT-certified motorcycle helmet, maintain current vehicle registration, and carry the minimum required motorcycle liability insurance.
