As we go through the POA election process, I urge our community to pay close attention to a few things:
Ballots: Ballots were mailed to homeowners on Monday, April 4. Ballots may be returned via mail (envelope included with ballot) or at the 24/7 ballot box located outside of Blue Bird Hall. If returning the ballot by mail, please mail it before May 6. May 12 is the day the results will be counted and reported.
A quorum is 1600 out of 4800 (1/3 of the owners.) If we don’t have a quorum, we get to pay for another count with a lower quorum of 25 percent (1200 votes). Why would we want to pay for this just because 400 votes were not originally cast? You can even mark “For Quorum Only” on the ballot if you don’t want to choose a candidate.
Candidates: Take time to get to know the candidates. Everyone here has opinions – they are all over social media. Have you noticed candidates that seem to be missing in action? Not responsive? Not even advertising? Guess what – if they are MIA during the campaign season, they will be MIA when it comes to representing your interests as a board member.
Check the candidates’ responses to questions, and look at their activity in CL before they decided to run. Have they attended board meetings or budget meetings? Do they know where the tennis courts are? I would hope that we would want a board that understands our community as a whole and doesn’t pander to specific groups, clubs, amenities, etc. Whether we admit it or not, we are a diverse community with varied interests. Some are passionate about the golf course, the lake, our parks, our kids, our dogs, security, etc. Our board members must be passionate about all of Canyon Lake.
Don’t waste your votes. If you only like one candidate, put in one vote for that person and skip your second vote. Statistically, if you use the second vote just because you have it, you risk your chosen candidate’s odds.
This is our community. Let’s do it right.
