Local Boy Scout to restore B-17 at March Air Field Museum

Fourteen-year-old Canyon Lake Boy Scout Gavin Dalton is a Life Scout in Wildomar Troop 2011. To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, Dalton must develop and lead a project.

For his Eagle Scout project, Dalton will be restoring the inside of a B-17 at March Air Field Museum. The rear of the B-17 has already been restored by another Eagle Scout.

“I would like to complete the front half of the restoration so that the B17 interior is fully restored,” Dalton said. “I have chosen this project because of the historical significance the B17 played in WW11. I myself want to go into the Air Force and fly aircraft.”

Dalton will be focusing on restoring the forward bombardier cabin, cockpit, and connecting catwalk. The restoration process includes scraping off the old paint and cleaning out the inside of the aircraft, removing old wooden flooring and bombardier workbench, painting the interior, rebuilding a section of the flooring that has become rotten, and replacing the workbench top.

To raise funds for his project, Dalton will be holding a garage sale on Saturday, March 4, and Sunday, March 5, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., weather permitting, at 22636 Pin Tail Dr., Canyon Lake.

If it rains on Friday, the sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday. Donations are welcome and may be dropped off in the drive on the morning of the sale.
