A late-night prank prompted a 911 call and a sheriff’s response after a Canyon Lake family believed a masked intruder was attempting to break into their home.
On July 7 at approximately 1:44 a.m., the homeowners were jolted awake by a loud bang on their garage door. Startled and unsure of what was happening, they checked the notifications from their Ring security camera. What they saw only heightened their fears: a masked individual in all black clothing approached the front of the home and deliberately covered the camera, leaving them unable to see what was happening outside.
Believing an intruder might be attempting to break into their home, the homeowners gathered their children from their beds, retreated to their bedroom, and called 911. “Our children were terrified,” homeowner Jason Libring said.
Within minutes, several sheriff’s deputies arrived and began treating the situation as a potential burglary. Deputies searched the perimeter of the property, checking for signs of forced entry or anyone hiding nearby. Once they determined there was no immediate threat, they instructed the homeowner to come to the front door.
Only then did the mystery unravel.
Stepping outside, the homeowner discovered that the house had been toilet-papered. What had apparently been intended as a late-night prank had instead triggered a full emergency response, leaving the family terrified and law enforcement responding to what they believed could have been a dangerous crime.
“As innocent as it turned out to be, it was terrifying for our family at the moment,” Libring said. “Our children are terrified to sleep in their own beds tonight.”
While toilet-papering has long been viewed by some as an innocent prank, this incident serves as a reminder that pranks can have unintended consequences. Masking one’s identity, tampering with a security camera, and pounding on a home’s garage door in the middle of the night can easily be interpreted as the beginning of a home invasion. In this case, what may have started as a joke ended with terrified family, a 911 call, and multiple sheriff’s deputies responding to ensure the family’s safety.
