After nearly 25 years of law enforcement service, including more than five years with the Menifee Police Department, Chief of Police Chris Karrer announced his retirement today.
Karrer, who has served with the Menifee Police Department since its inception, was appointed by City Manager Armando G. Villa in December 2022.
“As I reflect on a fulfilling career, I am very thankful for my time here in Menifee and am looking forward to my retirement,” Chief Karrer said. “I have full confidence that the department will continue to thrive thanks to the exceptional men and women who serve and protect our community each and every day.”
Stepping into the role of Acting Chief of Police is Captain Dave Gutierrez, a 24-year law enforcement veteran. Gutierrez has been with the Menifee Police Department and a key member of their Executive Team since its launch in 2020.
Gutierrez has led many specialty units throughout his career, including traffic, problem-oriented policing, code enforcement, animal services, and crime scene investigation. He also recently completed the internationally renowned FBI National Academy, which provides extensive training in advanced communication and leadership for a select group of executive-level officers each year in Quantico, Virginia.
Since its launch in 2020, the Menifee Police Department has grown to over 120 officers and support personnel. As the department moves into its next chapter, Gutierrez’s experience and leadership are expected to provide continuity and stability for both the agency and the community it serves.
