Orange County deputy killed in Lake Elsinore vehicle accident

Correction: The information provided to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the City of Canyon Lake regarding Deputy Brian Haney residing in Canyon Lake was incorrect. Deputy Haney was a resident of Canyon Hills, not Canyon Lake. The confusion may have come from “not having a change of address with the DMV,” according to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department. This article has been updated with the correct information.

Orange County Deputy Brian Haney was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Thursday at approximately 5:15 a.m. in the 25300 block of Railroad Canyon Road in the City of Lake Elsinore. Deputy Haney died after crashing into a palm tree while driving home.

Deputy Haney is a resident of Canyon Hills, confirmed Canyon Lake Mayor Jeremy Smith.

Family members have gathered at the scene and the Orange County Sheriff is en route, Mayor Smith said.

Captain Rayls of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Department will be staging the family and the Orange County Sheriff’s team in the old library at Canyon Lake City Hall.
