On a brisk 53-degree evening, 16 men play under the lights in the Pickleball Club’s Friday Night Lights Tournament. The format was a round-robin, each player switched partners each round. After six rounds, the total points leaders were declared the winners.
Leading the Group A Men’s Division in this closely contested battle was Mike Patton with 59 points out of a possible 66 points. Russ Muscarella was just one point behind Patton. He took second place with 58 points. Gene Taylor placed third with 55 points.
In the Men’s Group B Division, Mike Kidd took top honors and the top prize. Kidd had a perfect night, winning all six matches with six different partners. His most exciting match was being down 8-1 in game three and coming back with an 11-8 win by scoring the last 10 points. The young 77-year-old claimed the rights to being “the oldest player on the courts” that night.
Finishing a close second and winning five of six rounds was Armando Carranza. His only loss was to Kidd in the first round. Bill Van Vleet placed third among the eight players.
The Pickleball Club awarded the winners with POA gift cards, which can be used at the lodge or country club.
“Our thanks go out to our Social and Tournament Director Julie Doherty, who once again outdid herself and put on a fabulous tournament,” Steve Libring, Pickleball Club secretary, said. “Also a big thank you to the wives who supplied a tasty potluck for all to enjoy.”
The Pickleball Club will be hosting a clinic on Saturday, January 15, from 12 to 4 p.m. for adult residents who would like to learn how to play pickleball. Equipment will be provided. Reservations are not required. “Just show up at the courts at East Port with tennis shoes on and the club will provide the rest for you to learn the basic skills, rules, and game strategy to begin having a lifetime of fun,” Libring said.
