Rancho Water District awarded $2 million in grant funding for well construction

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) announced the award of $2 million in grant funding to the Rancho California Water District.

The funding will be used to construct a new well in the upper Valle de Los Caballos area. This is the fourth well that Reclamation has helped to fund through this grant program, and the $2 million award is the largest thus far.

With this new grant, a total of $5 million has now been committed by Reclamation for the construction of wells. Once complete, these wells are anticipated to extract approximately 5,000 acre-feet per year of recharged groundwater for use by Rancho Water’s customers.

Rancho Water’s project was one of 13 that were selected in Reclamation’s 2022 Drought Resiliency Project Grant Program. The program is part of WaterSMART, which works to implement actions to increase water supply through investments that modernize existing infrastructure. It supports a proactive approach to drought by providing water managers assistance to implement projects to build long-term resiliency to drought and climate change.
