On May 2, Riverside CHP officers attended the graduation of Marissa Licon, the daughter of fallen Riverside CHP Sergeant Steve Licon. More than a dozen officers were in the audience as Marissa walked across the stage at California Baptist University and received her bachelor’s degree.
“The officers who attended Miss Licon’s ceremony, along with the entire CHP family, wish her the best of luck and could not be prouder,” the department said.
Sergeant Licon, 53, was killed in the line of duty on April 6, 2019, while conducting an enforcement stop on Interstate 15 near the City of Lake Elsinore.
Sergeant Licon was fatally struck by Michael Joseph Callahan, a 39-year-old resident of Winchester, who was traveling along the right shoulder of the freeway. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation determined that Callahan was driving under the influence of alcohol when he struck Sergeant Licon. He was charged with second-degree murder. Marissa bravely gave a victim impact statement during the sentencing hearing on October 1, 2021.
