Riverside County deputy killed in Lake Elsinore shooting

A Riverside County deputy has died from his injuries after being shot earlier today in the City of Lake Elsinore, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Deputy Darnell Calhoun, 30, was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar after being shot while responding to a domestic violence call in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane. 

The suspect was shot and taken to the hospital where they remain in critical condition, according to the department. 

Shortly before 8 p.m., officials confirmed that Deputy Calhoun had died.

“We are devastated to announce the passing of Deputy Darnell Calhoun who was killed in the line of duty this afternoon,” the department announced.

Few details about the shooting were immediately available. A live press conference with Sheriff Chad Bianco will be held this evening at 9 p.m.

The shooting comes two weeks after Riverside County Deputy Isaiah Cordero was fatally shot while attempting a traffic stop in the City of Jurupa Valley. He was 32 years old.
