Riverside County man shoots wife, fires at deputies before taking his life in standoff

A domestic violence incident in French Valley early Monday morning ended in tragedy after a man allegedly shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.

At approximately 2:46 a.m., deputies from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station responded to a residence in the 35500 block of Shadow Drive following reports of an armed male inside the residence assaulting a female and preventing her from leaving with her child.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the deputies began making announcements and instructing the occupants of the residence to exit when they were shot at from a second-story window, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting.

Minutes later, a female with visible injuries exited the residence holding a child and informed the deputies that her husband had shot her and then shot himself.

The female victim was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. The child was also transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation. Deputies entered the residence and confirmed the suspect was deceased.

No deputies were injured during this incident. The identities of the suspect and deputies were not released.

The involved deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
