The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced the launch of its new Security Camera Registration Program and is asking residents who have residential and business cameras to participate.
Participation in the program will help the sheriff’s department to expand its investigative abilities and help to identify potential witnesses and criminals.
Registering in this program does not give the sheriff’s department free or unrestricted access to the registrant’s cameras or recorded video. The sheriff’s department will not have access to the security camera footage unless the registrant provides it.
The Security Camera Registration Program is simply a contact list that will allow the sheriff’s department to see who might have captured security footage that could be related to a crime that occurred in a particular area.
When a crime is committed, the sheriff’s department will refer to the Security Camera Registration database to identify any possible cameras that may have captured something of interest. The camera’s owner will then be contacted and asked to provide security video from the date and time of the crime. This process greatly expedites the investigation and may lead to the quick apprehension of the criminal.
Registration information is kept confidential and the registrant can withdraw from the program at any time.
