Riverside County Sheriff’s Department presents Annual Crime Report for City of Canyon Lake

During the meeting of the Canyon Lake City Council on March 13, Lieutenant Will Edwards of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department presented the 2023 Annual Crime Report for the City of Canyon Lake.

The report highlighted 4,664 calls for service, with deputies conducting arrests (13 for driving under the influence) and issuing 62 citations.

There were two fatal traffic collisions, up 200% from the previous year. There were 20 collisions involving injury (an increase of 150%), 11 non-injury collisions (a 50% decrease from 2022), and eight hit-and-runs (a 38% decrease).

Overall, there was a 6.5% increase in crime (violent and property).

Violent crimes include 11 aggravated assaults (a decrease of 21%) There were no homicides, rapes, or robberies, according to the report. Overall, there was a 6% decrease in violent crimes compared to 2022.

Property crime in 2023 includes seven burglaries, 52 larcenies, and 25 vehicle thefts. No arsons were reported. Overall, there was a 10% increase in property crime.

Twenty-seven cases were assigned to the Investigations Bureau. Twenty-two cases were closed and six arrests were made.

Thirteen cases were referred to the Community Behavioral Health Assessment Team.

The Flock Safety automated license plate reading cameras read an average of 22,037 license plates, resulting in an average of 46 alerts per day.

The average response time from call to arrival was 7.73 minutes for priority 1 calls, 24.31 minutes for priority two calls, 37.1 minutes for priority three calls, and 39.16 minutes for priority four calls.

The average response time from dispatch to arrival was 6.58 minutes for priority one calls, 13.05 for priority two calls, 13.60 minutes for priority three calls, and 15.98 for priority four calls.

Canyon Lake is supported 24 hours per day, with two deputies staffed per day. James Rayls serves as the captain for the City of Canyon Lake, Will Edwards serves as lieutenant.
