Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy dies from injuries received in on-duty traffic accident

A Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy succumbed to the injuries he received during an on-duty traffic collision on May 12.

Assigned to the Hemet Sheriff’s Station, Deputy Brett Harris was responding to a call for service when the accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and State Street in the City of San Jacinto.

Harris suffered major injuries as a result of the crash, including a catastrophic brain injury, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported.

A second deputy who responded to the collision was also injured while attempting to extract Harris from his vehicle. That deputy was also transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for a knee injury and released.

“In a final act of “Service Above Self, it was Deputy Harris’s wish to donate his organs so that others may live. The Harris family is currently working with the hospital to ensure his wishes are honored,” the department said in a statement.

Funeral arrangements will be announced when available.
