September is Library Card Sign-Up month

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the American Library Association and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.

Library cards are free at all Riverside County Library System libraries and can be obtained in person or online. Lost and damaged replacement cards cost $1. Library cards can be used at any Riverside County Library System location and for online resources.

A valid California Driver’s License with a current address or two forms of identification is needed when applying for a library card. Cards must be renewed every 3 years.

Patrons who sign up for a library card at the Canyon Lake Library during the month of September and post a photo with their new library card on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #rclssignup will receive a free backpack giveaway (while supplies last).

A list of Riverside County library locations can be viewed at https://rivlib.info/locations.
