Six electric motorcycles were impounded during a targeted enforcement operation on November 5 in the City of Lake Elsinore. The operations was initiated in response to a growing number of illegal, off-road-only electric motorcycles being operated in Lake Elsinore.
“Over the past several months, these riders have caused thousands of dollars in damage to city parks, and there has been a noticeable increase in collisions involving both electric motorcycles and electric bicycles,” The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
During the operation, six electric motorcycles and several electric bicycles were stopped. The electric motorcycle riders were issued citations and their motorcycles were impounded.
Electric motorcycles do not have pedals, and it is illegal to operate them on public streets and roadways. They must be registered accordingly. Electric bicycles have pedals and a wattage rating of 750W or less, making them fully legal to operate and ride just like non-electric bicycles. Bicycle helmets are still required for operating and riding electric bicycles.
