A 70-year-old man was killed and his wife was injured during a violent home invasion on November 5 in the City of Murrieta.
According to the Murrieta Police Department, officers responded around 8:18 a.m. to a residence on Old Spring Road after receiving a 911 call from a woman who reported that an unknown man had entered their home and attacked both her and her husband. The victim reported that she was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver and her husband had been stabbed with knife. She also indicated that her husband appeared to be deceased and that the suspect had fled out the back door.
The victim described the suspect as a Hispanic male with short hair, a beard and mustache, wearing a black shirt, black pants, and barefoot.
Officers initiated a coordinated search of the neighborhood for the suspect and, at approximately 8:57 a.m., located a male matching the suspect’s description in a ravine behind a nearby residence on Wild Flower Drive.
The suspect failed to comply with officers’ commands and concealed himself in nearby bushes, according to authorities. After several unsuccessful attempts to gain compliance, a police K-9 was deployed to assist in apprehending the suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Manual Arturo Alvarez of Modesto.
Alvarez was arrested on suspicion of homicide and attempted homicide. His bail is set at $4 million.
The victim is being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition. The suspect was treated for injuries sustained during his apprehension.
