On Wednesday, August 24, at approximately 1:41 a.m., Riverside police officers responded to an attempted burglary at an apartment in the 5900 block of Sycamore Canyon Boulevard in Riverside. As Riverside Police Officers were responding, information was updated that there was an exchange of gunfire between the resident and suspects, with the resident being struck in a lower extremity.
Officers arrived and located the adult male resident inside his apartment suffering from a gunshot wound. He was treated by paramedics and then taken to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury to his leg, officials said.
The suspects fled away in a white sedan and collided with parked vehicles in the apartment complex. Suspect Denzeal Young, a 20-year-old resident of Moreno Valley, was found inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound, officials said. He was treated by paramedics and then taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
An extensive search for additional suspects was conducted but none were located.
