Scarlett Benson, a third-grade student at Menifee’s Herk Bouris Elementary School, has been named the regional K–5 Poetry category winner in the Southern California School Nutrition Association’s 2026 “Nourish to Flourish” Student Contest.
The annual creative competition invites K–12 students across Southern California to celebrate school nutrition professionals through art, poetry, and storytelling.
This year’s theme, “Recognizing Your Berry Sweet Cafeteria Heroes,” drew 258 entries from across the region. Scarlett’s heartfelt poem and hand-drawn tribute stood out among the entries, earning praise from the judges for its genuine appreciation of her school’s cafeteria staff.
To commemorate the achievement, the Nutrition Services team at Herk Bouris Elementary was awarded a special trophy, emphasizing the deep connection between the students and the dedicated staff who serve them.
“Our Nutrition Services team often serves students up to three meals a day, making them one of the few groups on campus who interact with nearly every student each day,” Adriana Lopez, director of Nutrition Services,” said. “Through those daily interactions, they go beyond serving meals. Our staff creates a welcoming space where students feel seen, valued, and included while nourishing both their bodies and minds for learning. It is incredibly meaningful to see students recognize that impact and the care our team brings to their work.”
Herk Bouris Principal Patrick Wilkes said, “It’s really special to see our students take the time to recognize the people who support them every day, especially our nutrition team. I love that our nutrition staff builds relationships with kids and helps create an environment where students feel cared for and ready to learn. Moments like this remind me that we’re not just teaching academics, but we’re building empathy and appreciation in our Trailblazers.”
In recognition of her regional victory, Benson was honored by Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Root and the Menifee Union School District during the April 28 board meeting.
