During a planned student walkout at Heritage High School, a motorcycle rider was struck by a vehicle driven by an unlicensed 15-year-old.
On February 6 at approximately 9:29 a.m., about 200 students left campus to protest over ICE operations. As the students gathered near Highway 74 and Briggs Road, an unlicensed 15-year-old Menifee resident driving a Nissan attempted to make a U-Turn to find parking and join the walkout.
During the maneuver, the vehicle unintentionally struck the motorcycle rider, an 18-year-old Menifee resident who was not associated with the student protest.
The motorcyclist reported minor pain but was not transported to a hospital. The juvenile driver and their passengers were not injured.
After striking the motorcycle rider, the Nissan continued a short distance and then parked in a nearby parking lot to wait for an officer.
Preliminary findings indicate that the juvenile was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license, the motorcycle rider was not associated with the walkout, and the collision was unintentional. Drugs and/or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
The Menifee Police Department was aware of the planned walkout and had coordinated with the school district to help ensure student safety.
