Westbound 91 lanes from Route 71 to 241 Toll Road to close January 7 for work on new lane

All lanes on westbound 91 will be closed between Route 71 in Corona and the 241 Toll Road in Anaheim from January 7 at 11 p.m. to January 8 at 5 a.m. The closure will allow crews to safely install an overhead sign across the lanes – one of the last pieces of work for the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) 91 Corridor Operations Project.

The westbound 91 Express Lanes in Riverside and Orange counties, the westbound Green River Road on-ramp and off-ramp, the southbound 71/westbound 91 connector, and the northbound 15/westbound 91 Express Lanes connector will be closed starting as early as 8 p.m.

Motorists may head north on the 71, west on the 60, and south on the 57 to access westbound 91 in Orange County. The detour map is available at rctc.org/91copdetour.

Construction activity may change due to weather or other factors. If work cannot be performed on January 7, work will be rescheduled for the next possible date.

RCTC began construction of the 91 Corridor Operations Project in November 2020 to add a new lane on westbound 91 between the Green River Road on-ramp and the 241 Toll Road. The two-mile-long, non-tolled lane is designed to help relieve traffic congestion, especially during heavy morning commute hours.

Project partners for the $29 million investment include the Orange County Transportation Authority, Caltrans, the Transportation Corridor Agencies, and the City of Corona. To accelerate construction and reduce the impact to motorists and neighbors, RCTC used strategic project staging and offered financial incentives to the contractor to complete the project quickly.

The new lane is expected to open temporarily on Friday morning before the full lane closure on Friday evening. Additional lane closures will be required at night this week to stripe lanes and throughout January for final work.
