The City of Canyon Lake has announced the cancellation of its 9/11 Remembrance event scheduled to take place on September 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the fire station, due to poor air quality resulting from the Line Fire in San Bernardino County and the Airport Fire in Orange and Riverside Counties
The Canyon Lake Fire Department and city staff will be observing this remembrance ceremony in private.
The fire department planned to honor Thomas Hannafin, one of the fallen heroes who had a connection to the City of Canyon Lake, with an unveiling of a restored plaque and a speech from Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse. Although Chief LaTendresse’s speech will not be delivered, the plaque has been restored and will be available at the fire station for the public to see.
“The Canyon Lake Fire Department and city staff are saddened to have canceled this event, but the safety of the community will continue to be top priority,” the city said in a statement.
Additionally, the Canyon Lake POA has a separate 9/11 tribute event scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the lodge on the same day. According to POA President Bill Van Vleet, the POA will assess the situation in the morning and will decide whether to proceed with the event.
