The Canyon Lake Patriotic Quilters honored Cort Ofstad as a recipient of a patriotic quilt, recognizing his dedicated service in the U.S. Army.
A native Californian, Ofstad grew up in Van Nuys. After graduating from Grant High School, he balanced both work and college. In 1968, during a pivotal time in American history, Ofstad was drafted into the U.S. Army. After completing basic training at Fort Ord in California, Ofstad received additional training as a Radio Teletype Operator at Fort Gordon in Georgia.
After he completed his training in Georgia, Ofstad received orders to deploy to Vietnam, where he served with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade of the Americal Division. His time overseas totaled 11 months and 11 days—an experience that would shape his life and reflect his dedication to service.
After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Ofstad returned home and resumed his education. In 1974, he graduated from California State University, Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance. He began his professional career with Litton Industries in Beverly Hills, serving as a financial analyst. He later joined Astec America, where he built a long and successful career, ultimately retiring in 2016 as director of finance.
In 1978, Ofstad married his wife, Lynda, gaining not only a life partner but also an instant family with her 14-year-old son, Patrick. Together, they expanded their family with the addition of a daughter, Mandi, and later adopted a son, Peter. They have three grandchildren.
Since 2006, the Ofstad family has enjoyed life in Canyon Lake.
The mission of the Canyon Lake Patriotic Quilters is to recognize and appreciate veterans and active duty service members within the community. The handmade quilts are presented throughout the year and during major Canyon Lake events.
