The City of Canyon Lake is formally seeking to obtain its own unique ZIP Code after years of challenges caused by sharing a postal designation with neighboring communities.
On Wednesday, the Canyon Lake City Council will consider adopting Resolution No. 2026-32, formally supporting federal legislation that could help the city obtain its own unique ZIP Code.
The resolution backs Senate Bill 4505 (S. 4505), legislation introduced in the United States Senate that would require the United States Postal Service (USPS) to designate ZIP Codes for certain communities across the country, including the City of Canyon Lake.
For years, Canyon Lake residents have shared the 92587 ZIP Code with portions of Menifee, including Quail Valley and Sun City, as well as Romoland, an unincorporated Riverside County community. City officials say the arrangement has led to a variety of problems, ranging from delayed and misdirected mail to concerns about the city’s identity and the proper distribution of sales tax revenue.
According to the city, residents have frequently reported mail arriving late, being delivered to the wrong address, or not arriving at all. The city has also identified instances in which sales tax generated by Canyon Lake businesses may be incorrectly attributed to neighboring jurisdictions that share the ZIP Code. When this occurs, revenue that should be allocated to Canyon Lake may instead be distributed elsewhere.
The city began formally pursuing a unique ZIP Code in July 2024 when it submitted a request for a ZIP Code Boundary Review to the USPS District Manager. The request was denied in October 2024. The city then filed an appeal on October 31, 2024. That appeal was also denied in August 2025.
As the issue persisted, Canyon Lake joined a growing national coalition of cities and communities facing similar ZIP Code challenges. The coalition now includes jurisdictions such as Eastvale, Hidden Hills, the City of Industry, and communities in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Texas, and several other states.
Following limited progress through USPS administrative channels, 14 coalition members jointly hired a federal lobbyist to advocate for legislative reform. Those efforts contributed to the introduction of several ZIP Code-related bills in Congress during 2025.
In May 2026, U.S. Senators Joni Ernst, Alex Padilla, John Barrasso, and Michael Bennet introduced S. 4505, consolidating previous legislative efforts into a single bill. The measure includes approximately 75 jurisdictions nationwide, among them the City of Canyon Lake.
While the legislation would require USPS action regarding ZIP Code designations, it does not establish a specific timeline for implementation or mandate when new ZIP Codes must be assigned following passage.
The city views the bill as an important step toward addressing longstanding concerns affecting Canyon Lake residents and ensuring the community receives accurate postal recognition and appropriate tax revenue allocation.
If approved, Resolution No. 2026-32 would formally add Canyon Lake’s support to the federal legislation as it moves through Congress.
