The Canyon Lake City Council canceled the November General Municipal Election as a result of not having more candidates than offices to be elected.
The council’s 5-0 vote during a Special City Council Meeting on Thursday means incumbents Jeremy Smith and Kasey Castillo will retain their seats on the council for four more years and Jennifer Dain will retain her seat on the council for two more years. The three council members will serve exactly as if elected to the council.
California Elections Code 10229 contains regulations relating to canceling an election if there are no candidates or if fewer candidates qualify than there are open seats by the close of the nomination period. Under this section of the Elections Code, the city council may appoint to the office the person who has been nominated, appoint to the office an eligible elector if no one person has been nominated, or hold the election if either no one or only one person has been nominated.
The cancelation of the election will save the city approximately $20,000 to $30,000.
