With the recent detection of zebra mussels in the Colorado River, the Canyon Lake POA is warning residents about these invasive species and offering tips on how to prevent them from spreading to Canyon Lake.
“We must act now to prevent them from spreading to Canyon Lake,” the POA said. “These invasive species can wreak havoc on our water systems, increase maintenance costs, and harm property values.”
The POA offers the following tips:
- Inspect: Thoroughly inspect your boat and flotation devices after use in other bodies of water, particularly the Colorado River or other lakes.
- Clean: Remove all debris and mussels from your equipment.
- Dry: Ensure everything is completely dry before entering the lake.
State wildlife officials detected zebra mussel larvae in three spots along the Colorado River earlier this month, a sign that the invasive species could be spreading in the waterway.
