A female inmate was captured after a brief escape in Moreno Valley, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced on Tuesday.
The escape occurred on Monday around 10:15 a.m., when an armed correctional deputy arrived with the inmate, 25-year-old Kimberly Gallegos of Jurupa Valley, at a location at the 26000 block of Cactus Avenue.
As the correctional deputy attempted to remove Gallegos from the vehicle, she fled on foot through the parking lot. A chase ensued.
During the pursuit, the correctional deputy discharged one shot into the ground, the department said in a statement. Additional deputies responded and assisted in capturing Gallegos.
Gallegos was apprehended without any injuries resulting from the discharge of the firearm, the department said.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigations Unit will lead the investigation into the escape, and additional charges will be filed with the District Attorney’s Office. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigations Detail assumed the investigation into the discharge of the firearm.
The correctional deputy was placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy.
