Recent water samples collected on April 8 confirm that golden algae remains present in Canyon Lake and continues to be monitored.
Samples were taken from Indian Beach, Roadrunner Park, Happy Camp, and the main lake. Levels in the East Bay have remained relatively consistent, while a slight increase has been observed in the main lake, according to the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association.
Monitoring and testing will continue, and toxicity testing has been added as a precaution.
Over the last two decades, golden algae blooms have become a growing issue across the western United States. Canyon Lake experienced its first golden algae bloom in 2025, which resulted in significant fish mortality.
Blue-green algae thrive in nutrient-rich conditions; however, golden algae produce cysts that settle at the bottom of the lake and bloom when environmental conditions, such as lower water temperatures, are favorable. Golden algae prefer cooler water, so as lake temperatures rose over the summer, the algae went dormant and live cell densities decreased. As air and water temperatures decline, golden algae levels can rise again.
