A man was fatally shot by a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy early Monday morning after allegedly advancing toward the deputy while wielding a hammer, authorities said.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies assigned to the Jurupa Valley Sheriff’s Station responded at approximately 4:19 a.m. to the 6000 block of Collins Street following reports of an unknown disturbance and a female screaming in the area.
Upon arrival, a deputy encountered a man standing in the street who was reportedly swinging a hammer. Authorities said the deputy repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he failed to comply.
The man allegedly continued advancing toward the deputy while swinging the hammer, prompting a deputy-involved shooting.
The suspect was struck by gunfire, and deputies immediately began rendering medical aid until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
Responding deputies conducted a search of the area but were unable to locate the female reported to have been screaming prior to the shooting.
The identity of the suspect is pending notification of the next of kin. The identity of the deputy involved will not be released, authorities said. The deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave, according to department policy.
