Hemet man arrested in 2020 cold case homicide

A Hemet man was arrested on Sunday in connection with a 2020 homicide.

On September 2, 2020, at 8:34 a.m., deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station responded to a call of a man down on Highway 74, just west of Highway 79, in the unincorporated area of Riverside County known as Green Acres. Upon arrival, they located a male suffering from injuries sustained during an altercation with an unknown suspect.

Medical personnel responded to the scene and determined the victim, later identified as 42-year-old Jabulani Mensa Robinson of Homeland, was deceased.

With little suspect information, the case eventually went cold.

In 2026, the case was reopened after new information was obtained. Investigators identified 46-year-old David Starnes of Hemet as the suspect. It was learned that Starnes was in custody of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on an unrelated case.

In July 2026, as part of the ongoing investigation, Starnes was transported into the custody of the Riverside County Sheriff. On August 2, Starnes was arrested for murder related to this case.

This is an active investigation. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Investigator Sandoval at 951-235-2262 or 760-393-3522.
